Boys Cluster Football tounament

he Raynes Park Cluster Y5/6 Best Team Football Competition took place on a wet and windy Tuesday the 27th November 2018 at the Raynes Park High School Sports Field. All 11 schools were in attendance with both Poplar and Hillcross bringing a B team to take the total number of teams to 13. Schools were split into two groups with each team playing each other in the group in matches lasting 8 minutes in duration.

Although conditions were very greasy under foot with horizontal rain blowing in over the pitches, this did not dampen the mood of the players and despite the poor conditions played some superb football across each of the four pitches. All teams in attendance throughout the group stages scored some very well worked team and individual goals to the delight of the on looking crowds huddled under their umbrellas, as well as displaying some resolute and abrasive defensive play.

At the end of the group stages all teams were called back in to go through the results and applaud the effort from all of the players so far during the competition. Due to the miserable conditions it was only the top four teams in each group that played one final match to decide the top eight placings, with the rest of the schools departing to get under some cover and warm themselves up after a superb effort.

The battle for 7th place was won by Aragon who scored the decisive goal late into the game to beat an equally impressive Hollymount side 1-0. The contest for 6th place was an extremely tense affair with it going right down to the wire in a penalty shootout between Sacred Heart and Hatfeild. It was the keeper from Sacred Heart that made the difference saving the decisive penalty from the unlucky Hatfeild striker to win the match. 3rd Place was taken by a commanding performance from St Matthew’s against a battling Poplar A side, winning this game 2-0. The final was contested by the two most consistent teams of the competition and after the allocated 8 minutes of time St John Fisher and Hillcross A were drawn 0-0. Penalties then came into play and it was St John Fisher who held their nerve to score the decisive penalty to win the shootout. Credit must though be given to Hillcross A who had played some superb football throughout the competition to get to the final.

Congratulations to St John Fisher, Hillcross A, St Matthew’s and Poplar A, who all qualified for the Borough Finals and will represent the Raynes Park Cluster a week on Friday at tooting and Mitcham F.C.

A big thank you to all attending schools and players for their effort and enthusiasm despite the miserable weather, and of coursed a huge thank you to the Raynes Park High School Sports Leaders who again officiated the games brilliantly.
