Design and Technology

At Hillcross Primary School we believe that a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum is important because it encourages pupils to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. Children develop technical understanding and making skills, learn about design methods and investigate their environment and the materials around them.

Our Design Technology Curriculum

In Nursery and Reception planning is implemented using ‘Development Matters’ from the Early Years Foundation Stage Document. This relates to ‘Understanding of the World.’

In Years One to Six, we use the National Curriculum as the basis of our curriculum planning and deliver Design Technology lessons within the context of a topic.  This enables children to make cross-curricular links with their learning. It also provides meaningful opportunities for children to apply basic skills, such as writing and maths, to their Design Technology learning.  Here are some examples of the exciting topics we cover at Hillcross:

  • Where's Wally? - children to design and make a spinner to teach children in Nursery about England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and how these form the United Kingdom.  This is linked to their Geography lessons and Wally's travels.

Our aims through Design and Technology

Design and Technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Through their work in Design and Technology, children at Hillcross Primary School are encouraged to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas, and eventually making products and systems. They learn how to combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as of functions and industrial practices. The teaching and learning of Design and Technology at Hillcross Primary School motivates children to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts. Design and technology helps all children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators. This presents many learning opportunities for SMSC, including British Values and Equality, within and across our Design and Technology curriculum.

Our aims are to:

  • enable children to gain knowledge and understanding of technological processes and products, their manufacture and their contribution to our society;

  • develop imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making things;

  • enable children to talk about how things work, and to draw and model their ideas;

  • encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures;

  • explore attitudes towards the made world and how we live and work within it;

  • foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making things.

How can I find out more about the Design Technology my child is going to learn?

Please visit your child's year group page to look at the Topic Overview Charts.  These documents show you what your child will be learning each half term and how the different subjects link together.   There are also SMSC (social, moral, spiritual and cultural) Charts and these show how Thinking Skills, British Values, PSHE and Equality learning link directly to each topic.
