Girls Cluster Football Tournament

On Tuesday 13th November 2018 the Raynes Park Cluster Y5/6 Girls Football Competition took place at the Raynes Park High School Sports Pitches. With all 11 cluster teams represented in what turned out to be glorious sunny conditions compared to the previous day, players were egar to get stuck in.

As there were 12 teams in total, teams were split into two groups of 6, with each team playing eight minute matches against the other teams in their group before one final match to determine their overall finishing position. In addition to this the top two teams at the end of the group stages would qualify for the Girls Football Borough Finals taking place on Friday 23rd November at Tooting and Mitcham FC.

The group stages were a hotly contested affair with all teams growing in confidence with each match they played. Although not many goals were scored in the first couple of rounds, as players became more confident on the ball and utilise the space more effectively to beat the oncoming defence, the goals soon began to flow across each of the three pitches.

Group 1 – Final Standings

1st Merton Park (11 points)

2nd Hillcross (9 points)

3rd Hatfeild (8 points  +1 GD)

4th Hollymount (8 points – 1GD)

5th Poplar B (3 points)

6th Poplar A (1 point)

 Group 2 – Final Standings

1st Aragon (15 points)

2nd St John Fisher (10 points)

3rd West Wimbledon (7 points)

4th St Matthew’s (6 points)

5th Joseph Hood (5 points)

6th Sacred Heart (0 points)

After the group stages were complete, teams then played one final fixture to determine their overall standing. The first of these matches saw Poplar A and Sacred Heart battle it out for 11th and 12th place. Both teamse moved the ball well around the pitch and had a number of shots on goal, but both keepers stood resolute and the game finished a 0-0 draw. Therefore both teams were awarded joint 11th place. Joseph hood held on to beat a battling Poplar B side 1-0 to claim 9th place, while both Hollymount and St Matthew’s were held at a stale mate and drew this game 0-0, therefore both teams being awarded 7thplace. Hatfeild saved their best performance till last to sneak home against an unlucky West Wimbledon side and win this match 1-0 and secure 5th place. The game was equally as tight for the battle for third place between St John Fisher and Hillcross. Both teams had a couple of chances on goal, but it was St John Fisher who managed to come up with the winning strike and hit the bottom corner to win this game 1-0.

The final was an extremely tense affair played between arguably the most consistent two teams at the competition. Aragon came into this game winning all of their pool matches, with a standout 8-0 victory in one of their games to state their intent. The girls from Merton Park were equally as impressive winning three games and drawing two. Some of their goals came from some absolute thunder strikes from way outside the area. After the allocated 8 minutes the scores were deadlocked at 0-0 and despite a 1 minute period a winning goal could not be produced by either side. Penalties were then required to separate the two sides and it was Aragon who held their nerve to slot home the winner and win the tournament. Commiserations to Merton Park who were outstanding and took the result with grace and congratulated the girls from Aragon after the game.

Congratulations to Aragon, Merton Park, St John Fisher and Hillcross who all go on to represent the Raynes Park Cluster at next week’s Borough Finals. Congratulations must also go to our Refspect winners Joseph Hood, who showed some fantastic sportsmanship and were voted as worthy winners by the majority of the competing schools.

A huge thank you must also go to the Raynes Park Sports Leaders who did another brilliant job at officiating the matches – Well done all!
