PE and Sports Premium
The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6 and must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.
This means that we should use the premium to:
Develop or add to the PE and sport activities that our school already offers
Make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
As a school we strive to inspire our pupils to actively take part and progress in a range of physical activities embedding a desire to be active and healthy for life. At Hillcross developing a child’s physical health and mental wellbeing is as important to us as improving their academic performance therefore it is an essential part of our school curriculum.
Early Years (Nursery and Reception)
Our focus as children begin their journey in our Early Years classes is developing their skills such as coordination, control, manipulation and gross and fine motor movement. The children take part in weekly PE sessions as well as twice daily ‘Wake-Up Shake-Up Sessions’ and also have continuous access to the outside learning environment, where there are physical activities and challenges set daily. Key Stage One (Year 1 and Year 2)
In key stage one, our intent is for children to continue to develop, and begin to master, basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching. We help them to develop balance, agility and co-ordination, and to begin to apply these in a range of activities. As part of their learning in PE they will participate in team games and to understand how simple skill tactics for attacking and defending are important. In addition to a weekly PE session taught by the class teacher, the children in Key Stage One have weekly dance lessons led by a specialist dance teacher. In these sessions the children perform dances using simple movement patterns and are encouraged to create sequences of movements.
Key Stage Two (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6)
When children are in Key Stage Two, they will continue to further develop and build upon the skills taught in earlier years and to apply them in a variety of contexts. They will take part in competitive games, modified where appropriate, (for example, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis), and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending. The children will continue to develop their flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through their learning in athletics, dance and gymnastics in particular. During Key Stage Two children are also taught orienteering skills as they take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and as part of a team.
Throughout this key stage, the children have the opportunity to compete in intra-house sports competitions. Children are also given the opportunity to take part in inter-sports competitions including football, swimming, gymnastics, tennis and cricket through our membership of the Merton School Sports Partnership. As a school we also take part in many specialist inter-school competitions including those for children with identified SEND needs.
Extra-Curricular Sports Clubs
We offer a wide variety of after school clubs to children from Year 1 – Year 6. Some of these are run by our teachers and support staff such as netball, football, gymnastics, cricket, tag rugby and table tennis. We also have external club providers such as yoga, dance and cheerleading.
