Spring 1
Week 5
Storytelling Week began with an exciting workshop led by the Polka Theatre, where the children developed their storytelling skills. This learning continued in the classroom, with the children enjoying becoming authors and creating their own storybooks. As mathematicians, they have been writing first, then, now number stories and representing with an addition equation. As biologists, we worked scientifically to explore the sense of smell. Finally, we wanted to say all the children showed great confidence in their auditions, and special congratulations goes to our HHGT semi-finalists, well done!

Week 4
As historians, the children used construction resources to build Morden in the past. As biologists, we continued our learning about the different senses and worked scientifically, using our sense of touch to guess hidden items. We also welcomed a few exciting special guests this week, who thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Year 1!

Week 3
This week, we have continued our learning as biologists, exploring our senses with a focus on hearing. We also enjoyed a very creative week in the art room, colour mixing with primary colours to create secondary colours. As mathematicians, we have been using part–part–whole models to help us identify missing addends in equations. Finally, we were blown away by the confidence and talent showcased during the Hillcross Has Got Talent auditions. While we wish every child could have been fast-tracked to the next round, we congratulate our first-round winners on their fantastic performances!

Week 2
We have had a very science and history-filled week in Year 1!
We were lucky to welcome a visitor who came to talk to us about how Morden has changed over time. We explored a range of objects from the past and compared photographs from long ago with how Morden looks today. Did you know that the Iceland shop in Morden used to be a cinema? We were very surprised!
In Science, we investigated our senses. We went around the school collecting sounds, just like The Sound Collector, and discussed how difficult life would be if we didn’t have one of our senses.
What a fantastic week of learning we have had!

Week 1
A freezing cold start didn’t stop the Year One children from embracing the new school term with excitement and enthusiasm! We launched our new history-focused topic, ‘A Step in Time’, and stepped into the role of biologists as we explored the different parts of the body. In maths, we continued our exploration of shapes, and as writers we have been sound-collecting and recording lots of onomatopoeic words in preparation for creating our own poetry. A very busy and exciting week indeed!
