Autumn Term 1

Week 8

The final week of the Autumn 1 term and the children are still thoroughly enjoying all the learning opportunities within the classroom. As artists, we have been creating sculptures using natural resources, inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy.
As mathematicians, we have revisited part-whole models and explored how we can partition numbers in different ways. Our written work has been sparked by the mysterious arrival of a cauldron and some spooky ingredients — the children have been very excited to create their own poems.

It has been a fabulous start to the school year, and we are excited to see what we will all achieve next half term!

Week 7

Another fun-filled week of learning and discovery! We were very lucky to receive our pumpkins, which not only will support our science learning over time through exciting investigation opportunities, they have also inspired some beautiful seasonal observational painting! As part of Black History Month, the children took part in a fantastic workshop that helped deepen their understanding of its importance and impact. To end the week, we enjoyed an amazing trip to the Polka Theatre, where we watched Well Done, Mummy Penguin. Despite some technical difficulties, the children showed incredible enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. What a brilliant way to wrap up the week!

Week 6

This week, our young mathematicians have been exploring how numbers can represent sets and investigating the different ways numbers can be composed. As writers, we let our imaginations run wild by creating and writing our very own alternative endings to The Enormous Turnip story. A huge thank you to our very special visitors who helped the children step into the shoes of historians! With their support, we had a fascinating time learning all about what school was like in the past.

Week 5

This week, we’ve become Mini Musicians as the Legacy Project has launched at Hillcross! We've been learning new songs, keeping a steady pulse beat, following musical notation, and ending each day with a joyful Big Sing session. As writers, we’ve created a story map of The Enormous Turnip to support our storytelling and writing over the coming weeks. This visual tool is helping us plan and sequence our ideas effectively. We also had the exciting opportunity to share our amazing Toy Box poems with Mr Christy, Miss Martin and the Year 6 children, who were very impressed with our creativity and fantastic writing!

Week 4

Week 4 was jam-packed with fun and learning! We started off with an exciting workshop all about knights and castles. We applied our past knowledge from last year to help us tackle the dragons. Continuing our topic of seasons, as physicists, we went on an autumn walk and spotted signs that the season was about to change. The fun didn’t stop there, we also had our trip to the mosque. This was such an amazing experience, and the children learned lots of white hat facts to support their RE lessons.

Week 3

We kicked off Week 3 with a mysterious visit. We discovered a note left by some angry toys, demanding that we use adjectives to describe them. We wrote some amazing poems, describing all the toys. As mathematicians, we continued to focus on our numbers to 10 and began exploring different 2D shapes. As physicists, we observed the weather each morning so we can compare it to different seasons. Finally, as artists, we explored the work of Andy Goldsworthy. It has been a very fun week!

Week 1 and 2

What a wonderful start to the new school year! The children have shown high levels of excitement and enthusiasm to be back at school and have settled really well into the new Year 1 routine. We have been very busy already! As writers, we have been learning to identify a noun phrase and engage our readers with the use of adjectives and as mathematicians, we have been partitioning numbers into 2 parts. Finally, as historians, we have started our history lessons by talking about events that have happened our past.
