Summer 2

Week 5 - Lords and Ladies

To mark our final week of our Whole School Topic, A Knight to Remember, we have been learning about the role of the Lords and Ladies of the castle. The children made their own crowns, learnt to walk like royalty and created their very own portraits, just like the Lords and Ladies would have made of them in Medieval times. We also had a wonderful end-of-topic finale where the children enjoyed a range of activities, from falconry to a meet and greet with a horse and knight! What a wonderful experience for all.

Week 4 - Jesters

This week has been a busy one in Nursery. We have been learning our Jester Joe song, which the children have loved, and practising moves to go along with it, as well as finding out all about the role of the Jesters in Medieval times. The children loved trying to find new and exciting ways to make each other laugh, just like Jesters would have done! We also had our EYFS trip to Hobbledown, which was an absolute joy for all the children and families.

Week 3 - Craftspeople

This week, we have been looking at the people who worked with their hands to build and craft in the mediaeval times, from shipwrights to carpenters. The children have had the opportunity to take on different roles and have loved creating collaborative castles using our construction resources in small groups. They beautifully demonstrated their ability to get along well, earning lots of You Can Do It tokens during this challenge. Across the week, we also brought the woodwork area into the classroom to have a go at hammering real nails into wood, thinking about how we can maintain our safety whilst doing so. Lots of brilliant physical development skills are learnt through this activity and it's also lots of fun!

Week 2 - Servants

This week, we have continued with our Whole School Topic learning and focused on servants! The children have role-played washing clothes, sweeping the floors and making food throughout the week and also thought about how the servants may have felt having to do these jobs. We considered how the Knights and Kings may have felt carrying out their roles and responsibilities too, and the children showed great empathy!

Father's Day

To celebrate the special men in our lives, the children have also learnt about how we can celebrate Father's Day as a way to say thank you. We have used our cutting skills to cut out different lolly pops and demonstrated our ability to select resources for a specific purpose while decorating the fronts of our cards. We also independently wrote our names, using our name cards to support our letter formation. We are very proud of the persistence everyone has shown towards these tasks and skills!

Week 1 - Knights

This week, we launched our whole school topic, A Knight to Remember! The children have fully immersed themselves in this topic already, getting into character on Monday and then designing their very own shield, thinking about using colour for a purpose across the week with an adult. We have also been practising our pre-writing skills by using our YELs to decorate a shield in Big Art and completing knights and castles maths in our independent learning. We can't wait to find out what we'll learn about next week!
