Equality and Wellbeing Committee
Monday 29th September
The children at Hillcross have a genuine voice in the things we do and the way we do them.
Our Equality and Wellbeing (E&WB) committee had their first meeting of the year this week, and we welcomed 2 new members to the team. The committee spent time planning their actions for the year ahead, in addition to organising the collective worship for Black History awareness month and the charity fundraiser Wear Red to Show Racism the Red card.
As well as leading learning for children in school about awareness months this year, the E&WB committee will be involved in:
- Planning and leading whole school events such as Wear Red to Show Racism the Red Card,
- Supporting decision-making around extracurricular and leisure activities
- Holding staff and pupil groups to account to ensure all members of our school community are represented and celebrated
- Thinking flexibly about events in school to avoid unconscious bias
- Gaining the views of pupils and staff on how their culture is being celebrated in school
If your child has ideas or feedback on how we can make our school an even better place, encourage them to seek out a member of our E&WB committee.
Monday 10th November 2025
Our Equality and Wellbeing (E&WB) committee met again this afternoon with a focus on one of their action plan targets – to raise awareness of the deaf community (children, staff, parents, visitors) at Hillcross. The committee met with Charlotte from the charity Chloe's and Sophie's Special Ears Fund to talk about how the charity came about, the work that they do and how we can work with them as a school. The children asked some excellent questions to deepen their knowledge. Did you know there are approximately 50,000 deaf children in the UK? The E&WB committee look forward to working closer with the charity over the coming months.
Monday 19th November 2026
The Equality and Wellbeing committee met this afternoon – they were small in number but mighty in discussion and decision-making! During the first part of the meeting, the children discussed resources shared by the Chloe and Sophie's Special Ear Fund charity following the virtual meeting. They 'voted with their feet' to decide on which items would support pupils at Hillcross best and will put forward their requests to the charity. The latter part was spent reviewing the Ootiboo prospoal for the upcoming project that the children have been supporting. Some of the children will be reporting back the committee's views to Ootiboo later this week.
Monday 2nd March 2026
This week, the children conducted a learning walk around the school. They were given the opportunity to share thoughts on equality shown in class reading areas and the representation of age and gender across the school. It was a great opportunity for the children to engage in meaningful discussion and evaluation – we were impressed with the children's deep level of thinking!
