Spring 1

Week 1

Year 3 have had a lovely week starting Spring Term! As physicists, we are learning about forces this half-term and this week we looked at the simple forces, push and pull. We used blue tac to show how this works, and then we investigated the classroom to see which items use the push and pull force. As designers, we are learning about pneumatic toys, and we learnt that they need pressurised air to work. Responding with wonderment and awe, we watched how a stomp rocket works and made our own pneumatic paper rocket! As readers, we started our new Whole Class Reading text, ‘The Iron Man,’ which we are really excited to read!

Week 2

Our topic this half-term is ‘Settle Down!’ where we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons. This week we looked at primary and secondary sources to learn some white hat facts and come up with a historically valid question that we want to find out the answer to this half-term! As physicists, we continued our learning about forces and investigated which surfaces are best for cars to travel on. As theologists, we were lucky enough to visit Wimbledon Synagogue, where we learnt all about Judaism, our focus religion for this half-term! We had an incredible morning and learnt lots of white hat facts!

Week 3

This week, Year 3 continued their gymnastics learning during PE and learnt all about balances. We learnt two new balances, arabesque and stalk stand. As historians, we continued our learning about the Anglo-Saxons and what life was like for children. This week, we focused on education. As physicists, we continued looking at forces, and we learnt all about non-contact forces by trying to make a paper clip go into the air without anything touching it. We also started looking at non-chronological reports as our next writing focus. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be writing our own all about the Anglo-Saxons!

Week 4

This week, Year 3 have been working extremely hard! Continuing our learning about the Anglo-Saxons, we wrote some more paragraphs for our non-chronological reports and also focused on subordinate clause sentences. In History, we learnt about what the Anglo-Saxons did for fun by completing traditional activities: riddles, storytelling and the classic game ‘Knuckle Bones.’ As mathematicians, we started learning how to use the column addition method to add and used dienes to help us develop our understanding.
