Summer 1
Week 1
What a brilliant first week back in Summer 1! As writers, we started our new narrative writing based on ‘The Stone Age Boy.’ We started by making sure we knew the sequence of the story and acted out the key parts. The most exciting part of our week was our visit from Portals to the Past, where we completed a workshop to launch our half-term topic, ‘The Stone Age!’ The children are very excited about learning lots more about this period of history.

Week 2
Year 3 have had a fantastic week of learning! In Maths, we’ve been mastering the art of telling the time, applying our Year 2 knowledge to tackle Roman numeral clock faces. The children showed wonderful perseverance and a real strive for accuracy as we moved from o’clock and half-past into the "minutes past" the hour. Out on the field, our Athletics unit continued with a focus on perfecting different throwing techniques, while in History, we turned into detectives. By examining primary and secondary sources, we’ve been uncovering fascinating facts about life in the Stone Age.

Week 3
Year 3 have been super busy this week! As mathematicians, we have continued our learning about time and looked at how to tell the time to the nearest minute to and past the hour. As musicians, we used tuned and untuned instruments to create a piece of music to show light and dark. In PE, we continued with our athletics unit and looked at more throwing techniques. The adults in Year 3 are particularly proud of how hard the children have worked on their independent writing. They created their own narratives based on ‘The Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. They have produced some absolutely incredible writing!

Week 4
As historians, Year 3 continued their learning about the Stone Age this week and discovered the mysteries of Stonehenge! We discussed the theories of how and why it is there even though there is no certainty due to there being no written evidence from the time! The children also created some amazing home learning! We had some axes, spears, cave paintings and fossils! We were also really lucky as, this week, we had the opportunity to take part in Morden’s ‘Pickle Project.’ Working as global citizens, the children were tasked with helping to plan seeds that will eventually be planted in the middle of Morden Town Centre! Watch this space!

Week 5
As chemists, Year 3 set up an investigation to understand the composition of soil. We collected soil from around the school and filled the bottles with water. Using our scientific enquiry skill of ‘Observing Overtime,’ we left them to sit for a few days and the soil separated, allowing us to see the different layers of soil. As mathematicians, we have begun learning about fractions, investigating parts and wholes, the sizes of different parts and comparing their sizes. As writers, we have been writing information texts about Woolly Mammoths and next week we will be applying our learning to create a piece of independent writing about Sabre Tooth Tigers.
