Autumn 1
Week 1 & 2
What an amazing couple of weeks we have had settling into year 3! Linking to our book stimulus, 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch,' we visited the Art Studio to apply our painting skills. As mathematicians, we have been looking at a range of different ways to compose 100. As geographers, we used the playground map to recap and review our knowledge of the 7 continents of the world. We then applied our past knowledge to learn about the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In PE, we have started this half-term's topic, Hockey, and learnt how to how a hockey stick correctly.

Week 3
Year 3 have been super busy this week! As writers, we began our instruction writing unit by completing an experience day! The children had a carousel of activities to complete by following different instructions. We made origami swans, card towers and even Lego cars! As biologists, we continued our learning about a balanced diet. By using the scientific enquiry skill of classifying, we made our own eat well plates to understand which foods belong in which food groups. In DT, as designers, we designed our own savoury tart which we will be making later on in the half-term! We linked this to our science learning and made sure they had food from a range of different food groups!

Week 4
Year 3 took part in a drama workshop this week to tell a story about Knights, Witches and Dragons! We had so much fun becoming different characters and using our imaginations! As mathematicians, we have continued looking at the composition of 100, and we used dienes to show how tens make number which bridge 100. As theologists, we used information from secondary sources to research symbols that are important in each faith. Working in teams, we gathered our findings and created informative posters to present to the rest of the class.

Week 5
As designers, Year 3 continued with their DT learning about savoury tarts and learnt how to cut food safely using the claw cutting technique. We will be using this skill next week when we cook our savoury tarts! As geographers, we used atlases to learn how to identify places in the world using lines of longitude and latitude. We identified continents and oceans that lie on the different lines! As writers and using our green hat thinking, we have been designing our own fantasy food product in English. This week, we independently wrote our recipes using all the new writing skills we have been learning in Year 3, including subordinate conjunctions and adverbs.

Week 6
Year 3 visited the local supermarket this week to buy the ingredients needed to make their savoury tarts in DT. We also completed a range of activities around the shop using our Science, Maths and English skills! The next day, we visited the food technology room and applied all of the cooking skills we have learnt this half-term to cook our tarts. We linked this to our science learning on balanced diets and ensured our tarts had a range of food from different food groups. They were super yummy!

Week 7
To finish off our DT topic all about savoury food, Year 3 welcomed Chef Tony to create our own pizzas by applying all of the skills we have learnt! In PE, we continued with our hockey learning. This week we applied our knowledge of push passing and developed this by passing while moving. At Hillcross, we have been showing racism the red card and on Friday, we came to school wearing red and made posters showing how important it is to stand up to racism!
