Adrenaline Auto-Injector (AAI)

Children suffering from severe allergic conditions, likely to result in anaphylactic shock, should have an Adrenaline auto-injector device (usually known by the brand name Epi-pen) in school.  Parents/Carers should supply one for the class and one for the office.  They should ensure that the medication has not exceeded its expiry date.

It is the parent/carers responsibility to inform the school of the child’s condition, to ensure that the Adrenaline auto-injector are in school and to complete the necessary paperwork to enable the Adrenaline auto-injector to be administered.  Adrenaline auto-injector's will not be administered unless all necessary paperwork has been completed.  Support will be given to complete paperwork, if required.   A number of staff have volunteered and been trained to administer Adrenaline auto-injector

If the child is exposed to a substance that causes anaphylaxis, first aid procedures will be followed and the Adrenaline auto-injector will be administered. An ambulance will always be called if the Adrenaline auto-injector  is used even if the child returns to full health.

All prescription medicines will be stored safely.  Children will know where their medicines are and be able to access them immediately.
