Spelling and Phonics
At Hillcross, we follow the Phonics International scheme. For more information, please click on the tab to the right.
The teaching of spelling builds on the children’s phonological skills developed during the early stages of their literacy development. At Hillcross, we have used the National Curriculum expectations and Phonics International stages to develop our own progression document which is followed by teachers throughout the school. Every week, children learn a focus spelling pattern and have the opportunity to practise and apply this throughout the week.
In addition to the spelling rule sessions every week, children have the opportunity to discuss and practise words from the ‘National Curriculum Word Lists’.
The school has also purchased a subscription to Bug Club: https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0
This incredible website has videos and games linked to all the spelling rules. Every child has their own log in and can access this at home.
