Summer 1
Week 5
Ending the half term with a literal BANG!, the African drumming workshop was an incredible experience for both children and parents! As mathematicians, we took our learning outside and used the giant clock to embed our knowledge of minutes past and to. As artists, we completed out final pieces, the self portrait and evaluated our artworks to our initial sketches with much pride! It has been a wonderful half term learning about Kenya and we are all very excited for the Whole School Topic in Summer 2!
Week 4
This week has been very busy! As mathematicians, we have been learning about time and became a human clock to help understand five minute intervals past the hour (this will continue next week). Sketching skills have been showcased with symmetrical portraits in preparation for the final artworks. In English, we have been writing a travel brochure to persuade the audience to visit Kenya and as geographers, we have been looking at human and physical features of the beach. The Innovation Lab finally opened its doors and we cannot wait to start getting creative with our learning in this dedicated space next half term!
Week 3
Within our English lessons this week, we have been learning about the features and techniques of instructions. We then followed a set of instructions to make our own healthy wraps before writing our own set of instructions including all of the features we have learnt about. As mathematicians, we have been looking at non-unit fractions to find 3/4 of shapes and amounts. During our geography lesson, we used a double bubble map to compare London to Nairobi.
Week 2
This week we visited the art studio to experiment with how we can create tone using different sketching pencils. As writers, we have been writing our own version of Handa's Surprise using expanded noun phrases to describe the fruit and animals within the story. We were lucky enough to take part in a 'Rumble in the jungle' drama workshop where we pretended to be different creatures, considering how they move and sound. As mathematicians, we have been finding quarters and thirds of shapes and amounts. Within our geography lesson, we looked at the physical and human features of rural Kenya.
Week 1
This week we have jumped straight into our new topic, 'A Journey to Discovery'. As geographers, we used atlases to locate Kenya and identify it's capital city of Nairobi and the countries surrounding it. Within our English lessons, we have sequenced and retold the story of 'Handa's Surprise' in preparation of us writing our own version of the story next week. Within our maths lessons, we have moved onto fractions and have been finding halves of shapes and quantities. As biologists, we have been identifying and naming the offspring of common animals.
