Autumn 1
Week 6
It was so lovely to see so many of you at our first parents meetings and share the amazing learning that has taken place in year 5. After another fantastic week, year 5 have been learning to multiply a 2-digit number by a single digit using short multiplication. Continuing our understanding of friction, we have investigated how the shape of an object is affected by water resistance. Delving deeper into North America, Year 5 ‘travelled’ around the continent discovering the different biomes and vegetation belts. As artists, we revisited primary and secondary colours and learnt that if we mix the same amount of a primary colour and a secondary colour, we create a tertiary colour. An exciting conclusion to our week was beginning our rehearsals with Soo Bishop from Merton Music for our Royal Albert Hall concert in March.

Week 5
Fantastic learning in Year 5 this week. The children have investigated the effect of air resistance by making parachutes of different sizes and timing how long they took to reach the ground. We discovered that the larger the surface area, the greater the air resistance because air resistance slows an object down. As mathematicians, we have been learning how to multiply a 2 digit number by a single digit number by applying partitioning strategies using concrete and abstract methods. As artists, we explored how to create different textures using acrylic paint to prepare for our own version of Starry Night. As a final celebration this week, Year 5 were invited to watch the preview of ‘Dweeb-A-Mania’ at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon before its opening to the public this weekend.

Week 4
Another busy week in Year 5. The children are really settling in well and have enjoyed an immersive experience using all their senses in our woodland area to prepare us for our narrative writing entitled ‘Ben and the Goblin’. During our PSHE lessons we delved deeper into friendships, understanding the difference between peer pressure and peer influence and knowing when to ‘do the right thing’. Other highlights this week have included: a visit from renowned author Ross Welford who took us on a journey of magic and adventure and a huge thank you to Mr Gurmit Saini - a member of our school community - who gave a thought-provoking talk about Sikhism, culture and beliefs where the children asked incredible questions to gain a deeper understanding.

Week 3
Year 5 have had a busy week this week. As writers, we have been developing our understanding further of regular and irregular verbs and how to spell compound words. As scientists, we enjoyed exploring measuring force using a Newton Meter to investigate which surface caused the most friction. We linked this scientific concept to our everyday lives from riding our bikes on the road, wearing trainers and plimsoles for PE and health and safety when the playground and field are wet. As mathematicians, we have been developing our understanding of tenths further by partitioning and adding tenths using practical resources.

Week 1 & Week 2
What an amazing start to Year 5! The children have settled in beautifully, making new friends, enjoying their new environments and learning to work in collaboration with their new teams. This week, the children enjoyed the challenge of creating the tallest, yet most stable tower using Lego; participating in a treasure hunt around the classroom to reveal a hidden message and playing ‘getting to know you’ bingo, making connections with new friends. Delving into our first topic of Year 5: ‘We’re the Kids in America’, we identified and located the different countries and oceans within and around the continent of North America. As artists, we have explored the life and works of Vincent van Gough and in PE, have been building upon our skills to refine our lateral pass technique in tag rugby.
