Autumn 1 2025: Walk Like an Egyptian
Week 7
We got to experience real Egyptian artefacts first-hand and learned so much about what life was like in Ancient Egypt. We explored the fascinating mummification process, played traditional Egyptian games, and found out what it was like to live and work as a farmer. We also learned about how and why Upper and Lower Egypt became one, and discovered the importance of the kings and their crowns. Using our maths knowledge, we measured things the way the Ancient Egyptians did - using a cubit (from elbow to fingertip), a palm (hand width), and a finger (finger width). It really was a wonderful day full of fun, learning, and unforgettable experiences!

Week 6
In Maths, we explored the composition of 4-digit numbers using manipulatives, including Dienes and counters. In English, we are now writing our own adventure story which is set in ancient Egyptian times and has a ‘baddie’. As biologists, we set up an experiment to investigate which drink has the greatest effect on our teeth. In Music, we have used a range of untuned percussion instruments to compose their own melodies using crotchets and quavers for music notation.
Week 5
In R.E., we explored how babies are welcomed into Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh families. We learnt about Jatakarma (the Hindu ceremony) and Naam Karan (the Sikh naming ceremony). In Music, we answered the question: How was Egyptian music structured? We then identified common features in Ancient Egyptian music. As scientists, we looked closely at our teeth and identified the three different types found in our mouths. We also applied our prior knowledge of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores to discuss why different animals have different types of teeth.

Week 4
In maths, we have started to explore column subtraction, and understand when regrouping is required. On Wednesday morning, we were very fortunate to welcome author Ross Welford, who shared his wonderful fiction books with us and inspired our love of reading. This week in Science, we deepened our understanding of the digestive system and discovered how it helps our bodies to stay healthy. In Art, we explored the meaning of proportion when drawing portraits and learned about the rules involved in sketching faces.

Week 3
What a wonderful week we’ve had! Our trip to Sky Studios was incredible, and the children had a brilliant time exploring behind the scenes and creating their own movie trailers. We hope you’ve enjoyed watching these at home! As mathematicians, we continued to practise adding two or more addends to find a sum using column addition. We also extended our thinking by exploring questions involving regrouping. In Science, we began learning about the digestive system, using secondary sources to research the body parts involved in breaking down the food we eat. In Art, we discussed the meaning of the word proportion and explored what it means to draw an accurate self-portrait.

Week 2
What a start we have had to Year 4! We have started to delve into our topic, 'Walk Like an Egyptian' and have learnt about Howard Carter in Radical Reading and also started to learn how to play hockey in P.E. In P.S.H.E, we have focused on healthy relationships and how to maintain these and have also started to investigate music and art during these ancient Egyptian times.
As mathematicians, we have been adding two or more addends to make a sum and used column addition to do this. As writers, we have learnt about common, proper, partitive and collective nouns.
