At Hillcross Primary School, we are passionate about making every pupil a fluent reader and writer. We understand that if children are equipped with the necessary skills to help them write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, it will unlock limitless opportunities for them. We enable every child to develop his or her knowledge, understanding, ability, confidence and independence, in the application and use of both spoken and written language.
The most proficient writers in any class are almost always readers. For this reason, we provide a stimulating and motivating curriculum which includes opportunities for pupils to engage with a range of exciting literature: these carefully chosen texts provide pupils with an imaginative and linguistic competence to supply them with the ‘building blocks’ to create their own writing. Furthermore, children write for real audiences and purposes which makes it exciting and meaningful.
Our Intent:
We aim for all children at Hillcross Primary School to leave Year 6 with the ability to:
- Read and write with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies.
- Take responsibility for their own learning including self-monitoring and correcting their own errors.
- Embrace reading, demonstrating their love of reading and a desire to read for enjoyment.
- Actively explore and show an interest in words and their meanings.
- Use a growing vocabulary in relation to grammatical terminology.
- Understand a range of text types, media types and genres.
- Write in a variety of styles and forms appropriate to the situation.
- Use their developing creativity, imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness.
- Use a suitable technical vocabulary to respectfully articulate their responses in any discussion.
