Whole School Topic 2020

It is a Hillcross tradition that in the second half of the summer term we provide the children with the opportunity to approach their learning through a whole school topic. The whole school topic enables everyone in the Hillcross Community to come together to learn collaboratively and focus on the same topic as their friends and siblings across different year groups, and for families to get involved in learning together.

The whole school topic for 2020 was:

The Hillcross Festival of Mind, Body and Soul built on the topic ideas that had been put forward by the school council and was chosen for its appropriateness to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the partial school closure.  The topic focused on promoting positive mental health and wellbeing, for ourselves and others, not just now but ongoing throughout our lives.  Each week focused on all children learning skills within specific curriculum subjects around a similar theme with relevant knowledge and skills targeted by different year groups.

Every week Hillcross values, Habits of Mind and British Values were linked to the weekly themes in order to further develop the children's understanding of these and their positive effect on our ongoing learning and well-being.

As creative and critical thinkers we will be developing our awareness of our four ‘House Thinkers’ with each week being linked to a thinker and one of their quotes.

Week 1: Healthy Community (You and Me)

Wollstonecraft (Red House) - "The beginning is always today."

Launch Day

To launch the 2020 topic we invited all members of the Hillcross community to take part in an 'Un-Mufti' Day, putting on their uniform and wearing rainbow inspired accessories.  The staff and children attending school all wore bright colours for the day.  The photographs were collated into a whole school video that helped to bring us all together in such unprecedented times.

Finale

The end of the whole school topic each year is celebrated with a grand finale. This event usually involves the wider Hillcross community coming together at a special event.  The 2020 finale was hosted virtually with everyone joining a live stream of the finale via Twitter.

The finale took place on Friday 3rd July. The children and staff in school came together, ensuring we observed the social distancing rules, to dance to the Wake Up Shake Up routine everyone had been learning across the four week topic. During the performance, families were encouraged to submit comments to the live stream so that we knew who was joining us at home. Here is the event in full for anyone who missed the live stream.
