Summer 1- Bug's Life!
Summer 1- Week 1: Introduction of minibeasts
This week, we launched our new topic all about minibeasts; 'Bug's life'. As scientists, we used our noticing lens on our minibeast hunt we carried out as our topic launch. For this, we went to the allotment area of our school grounds and searched high and low for different minibeasts. We found an array of minibeasts, and as writers, used our ability to segment and blend to write the names of the minibeasts we had found. As theologists, we explored our special places. As philosophers, we explored the book 'Hey Little Ant' and used our caring and critical thinking to discuss whether we should squash the ant in the book if we were the main character. To link to our topic of minibeasts, we carried out our P4C session in the woodland lodge and had a great time sharing our thoughts and ideas as a whole year group! We had a brilliant first week and are very excited to continue our minibeast learning!
Week 2- Slither Week:
This week our learning was all about the minibeasts that slither including: worms, snails and slugs. As readers, we had a great time reading some non-fiction books about minibeasts, using our brilliant segmenting and blending to do this! As athletes, we began our sports day practise demonstrating our brilliant balance and coordination skills. As communicators, we developed our listening skills when we were visited by the Perform workshop, who performed their interactive show 'Rumble in the Jungle'. They took us on a journey into the jungle, where we encountered a variety of minibeasts. We listened and followed instructions which helped the journey unfold!
Week 3- Flying Week:
We have had another brilliant week exploring all things minibeasts and focused on minibeasts that fly. As biologists, we looked at the features of flying minibeasts and discovered some key features they all have in common. We then used this knowledge, as designers, to create a design and then create a flying minibeast following our design. We used our green hat thinking to create exciting ways to join and make our minibeast sculptures. As mathematicians, we explored capacity. We had a great time in the water tray and the sandpit filling different containers to compare capacity and using our key vocabulary of: full, empty, half full to describe what we could see.
Week 4- Leg Week (Spiders):
As biologists we spent our week exploring spiders, we learnt key facts about spiders and learnt that they are arachnids! As writers this week, we used our fantastic collaboration skills to generate a range of interesting adjectives to describe a variety of different minibeasts and add them to a poster. We used our phonics knowledge to apply into our writing. As theologists, we thought more about special places in our community, and again, used our great team work skills to design a building that was special to us. Then, we were able to go outside and take part in a big build where we used junk modelling to create our special building. We had to work hard to identify the features of our special places and follow our design closely. We have had another brilliant week and cannot wait for our last week of minibeast learning to come!
Week 5- Transformation/ Finale Week
WOW! What a fantastic week to end a bugtastic half term filled of wonderful learning! This week, as scientists, we further explored butterflies. We used our white hat facts of the lifecycle of a butterfly to recreate the lifecycle. As illustrators, we concluded our minibeast stories by illustrating a beautiful front cover which we cannot wait to share with you! As mathematicians, we focused on the skill of counting on. We began to understand that we can count starting at a different number. However, most excitingly of all, we had our minibeast bug ball! We were all blown away by the green hat (creative) thinking that had gone into all of the costumes and we had a brilliant time sharing facts about the minibeasts we were dressed up as! We look forward to next term where our topic will be 'A Knight to Remember!'
