Developing the skill of Writing

Writing is an important skill to develop and one in which we use on a daily basis in our lives, whether this is writing using a pen or pencil or typing onto an electronic devise. Which ever tool we choose to use to note down our thoughts and ideas, understanding how to form and write is a key skill needed in order for us to communicate in the written form.

Across the EYFS, we develop the children ability to communicate verbally before we begin to write. The area of Communication and Language is crucial to a child further academic progress. Within the EYFS curriculum Communication and Language is one of the three Prime Areas, which means achievement within this area underpins all other learning, and we believe that a child needs to be attaining well in this area in order to progress academically later on in their school journey. The learning area of Writing, is one of the specific areas and includes many oral skills to be developed before the written form of communication can be developed.

Within our EYFS we continue to develop our practise to ensure the children receive the best quality care and teaching. Recent research evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation underpins our focus on the importance of high quality interactions between adults and children to develop their communication and language skills. Staff plan and deliver a range of different activities such as singing, storytelling and nursery rhymes – to develop children’s early reading and ability to hear and manipulate sounds.
